Titan vs. Frontier - Looking for advice from Owners

I'm considering a Titan or a Frontier.

I would like to wait for the Titan redesign/diesel, but don't have that option. I need to get something sooner.

The deals right now on the Pro-4X Titans are great. I can get a Titan for the same price as a Frontier with similar options. With that said, the Titan has not really had significant exterior changes since it was first released. It was advanced when it came out, so it isn't too far behind the curve right now...but it is definitely old technology compared to the other Full Size trucks. I will say that I did, and still do, really like the looks of the Titan. These days, looks are a big part of the purchase because most of the new trucks are dependable, and some what disposable (meaning they get traded before they become problematic.)

On the other hand, the Frontier is one of only a few trucks that still offers a Manual trans. That is a BIG plus for me. The concern I have with it is the smaller size...I've never owned a mid size, always a full size. I have a wife, and one child...so that may be a concern. I will say that 99% of the time I am driving alone. If we are doing something as a family, we take my Wife's vehicle.

My use for the truck will be 95% daily driver, so it is important for me to enjoy driving it just as much as it is for it to be functional. The other 5% will be surf fishing the TX beaches with an occasional run to a hunting ranch with minor mud and rocks. The vehicle will definitely NOT be a hardcore trail rig...although the beaches can become 30-50mi of soft sand requiring 4hi and some 4low. They beat up a truck pretty good...but I wont be on them too often (at least not the longer trips down the Padre Island Nat'l seashore).

I would consider an XTerra but I really need the exterior storage of a pickup bed.

I'm looking for advice on these two. Resale/trade value down the road, performance, longevity, and overall customer satisfaction are important.

I currently drive a Chrysler 200 as a daily driver, and have a 1989 Grand Wag for a toy/project. I want to temporarily retire the Grand Wag from surf fishing/hunting duty so I can do a resto-mod on it. If I retire it for a while, I will need a replacement until I'm done.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I've owned 1 Nissan, a first year Rogue SL AWD(wife's), and it was flawless. We traded it with 70k and never had a single issue, even with the CVT. My Brother is a hardcore Nissan fan, with a Hardbody, a 300Z, a 95 Pathy, and a 01 QX4...but no experience with the newer Frontier or Titan.

I realize your info may be biased but it's still informative.

Thanks in advance,
SQ

My buddy has an 2012 PRO4X and LOVES IT. he lives on a farm and uses his truck more then I do and he never has problems with it. He Daily drives it also and has owned it sense 13 miles. The interior on those things are REALLY NICE. Atleast his is with the red stiched seats are sick. He has a king cab or what ever they call em and like all the other mid size there is no human seats in the back. My advice on a fronty would be the CC. With the Titan a CC or KC will be suitable for almost all rides. I've taken road trips with 5 people in the cab and were comfy. and if your going towards a CC then you'll really be in business. problem between the two is that the gas mileage is almost the same. I get about 12 City 16 hwy on a good day. He gets alittle better with 14-17 city and 17-22 hwy.....i say such weird ranges cause its not my truck and he drives it like its a street car.and I drive like a grandpa. but I think there about equal and if you don't tow I would say froteir. if you do then titan. He also doesn't have any crazy mods done so idk how that would effect MPG but I know my v6 ranger took pretty hard to big tires and suspension mods. But We've lined em up acouple times and that thing has some serious power.

I've got a boat that I tow less than 2 miles to a boat ramp. The only other time it would be towed is if there is a hurricane, and I have a v8 Grand Wagoneer and a z71 Tahoe that can pull it if needed. I just need/want a truck.

I am looking at a Pro-4X Crew cab, whether it's a Titan or a Frontier. I definitely like the idea of a 6-spd manual trans though...so leaning towards a Frontier. The mid-size is my main concern, coupled with the fact that a Pro-4X Frontier and a Pro-4X Titan are about the same price. I have a hard time paying the same price for a mid-size as I would for a full-size.

frontier's have more bed options also to think about that plus acouple more mpg's but you'll never get that growl of the titan...

I do like the fact you can get the HB in a standard.

I have a 96 hardbody 4cyl5 speed manual
2004 Frontier 4cly 5 speed manual
2007 Titan
2006 Xrerra 6 cylautomatic
And I currently have a 2008 Titan LE and a 2010 Titan XE

I Loved the hardbody. Very peppy for a 4cyl. Fun to drive and never broke down or had any problems. 200+k when I traded it in for the 07 Titan. 26 mpg

The 04 hardbody was sluggish. Got fatigued driving it but had no problems except having tranny replaced. But it was a work truck and other people abused it.. Good truck just didn't like driving it. 23 mpg

The Xrerra had a little more power but not enough for much towing. Drive it 2000 miles to California pulling a 16' trailor with a gang box. 45 max over the mountains and 9 mpg but made it there and back no problem. Drove just like the frontier and didn't enjoy driving it. Got same mileage as the titans so no advantage to the smaller engine. Didn't really like it.. 17mpg

Loved everything about all my titans.
All the power I need. Fun to drive. Tows great. Don't get fatigued driving. Drawback MPG
08 LE 18-20 MPG
10 XE 16-17 MPG

I would get the Titan especially if you can for the same price, will probably be worth more then a Frontier if you do trade it in down the line. Mileage is only slightly better on the Frontier like 1 or 2 MPG. In my opinion the only place the Titan is behind is in there interior electronics with Ford/Ram/GM all having eight inch touch screens. Its down a gear on the tranny but its still a very proven and capable powertrain.

I had an 06 Frontier and I now drive an 07 Titan. I totaled the frontier and wanted to get another one until I started looking at Titans. They were very close in price and for the money you get so much more truck in the Titan. More interior space, bigger bed, A LOT more power... Get a Titan!

I observed the same things.

auto guide app is really spotty and the auto correct doesn't work when replying to other posts.

I was in a very similar situation recently. I was looking for a new truck and wanted Nissan and have a family but also need a bed. Originally I was more focused on the frontier due to the gas mileage and I didn't think I "needed" a full size truck. I was upgrading from a Mazda B3000. However, as soon as I test drove a Titan I feel in love with it and preferred every Titan I test drove to every Frontier. If you have a family and need a bed I personally think the Titan is a better choice.
The frontier crew cabs are great but for my needs the short bed was just too short. I ended up with a 04 king cab Titan and so far (only one week) it is perfect for me. I can fit my wife, 5 month old and 2 year old no problem but still have a nice bed. Gas so far has not been a major issue. My Mazda was a 2000 with a lot of issues and close to the Titan in MPGs. The space is great. I can't speak to preferring the manual.

I had an 08 CC nismo before the titan. i loved the frontier and i love the titan. The frontier was zippy and had tight handling with 18mpg. The titan is roomy with plenty of power to spare but it is thirsty. My tow needs outgrew the frontier so i upgraded. The frontier had great resale because at the time there were no cc nismo models for sale anywhere close to me that i could find. If it wasn't for tow needs i would still have the frontier but don't regret getting a titan.

I started off with a 08 king cab nismo frontier, loved that truck had a bully dog gt, magna flow catback an K&N cai. That truck would move, my buddy with his 08 hemi was chapped that he couldn't pull on the v6, he didn't have a chance. Got married an the thought of kids made me trade it in on a CC Titan. Loved the frontier but the titan is a lot more fun just from the power stand point alone. Like everyone else said the milage was similar. I vote titan for the fact their so close in price but IMO you couldn't go wrong with either.

This is the exact reasoning behind me buying one, not much differance in mpg and price from a mid to full size truck. But towing and power are way different.

I moved to a 08 Titan Crew SE 4x4 from a 07 Frontier Crew Nismo.

For me the jump was the desire to move into 4x4 for the boat ramps. It just happened that I found a Titan and took a drive. My bad, I really didn't have a need for a full size truck but I now own one...woop! The Fronty gets better gas mileage and had enough room for my family of three with the crew cab. My Titan will seat six with no trouble.

One thing that really annoyed me about the frontier was the center console is too far back and too low for my short arms. I could never rest comfortably however, with the Titan I have the column shift with the center seat back that folds down. All kinds of places to rest my arm now.

It's a tough choice but if I had to do it again, the Titan wins for room inside and out, especially because the pricing is so close.

Good luck.

I'd say Titan. If you and your wife are planning on child number two, the Titan will gladly accept two babyseats. Even if it's the 1% of the time that you may need to use your ride to move the family. I was looking at all sorts of Crew cabs and eventually settled with an '07 LE.

There are no regrets and to be honest I'd pay alot for fuel if I knew it protected my family from some clown running a light or sign, these trucks are built for safety.

i came from a 2010 frontier pro 4x. My 13 titan pro4x interior space vs the frontier is night and day gas consumption is similar but when we are doing a road trip i get better mpg on the titan. the tail gate assist on the titan is heaven sent lol the frontier's tail gate is very heavy.

VK56's power and sound is awesome!

its simple....the titan is made for a man. Frontier is more of a truck id buy for my 16 yo daughter. you know...to play in a sandbox or go shopping with. cute things like that.

I had an 08 Titan and loved it. I always wanted a Jeep so I traded it in for that. Then missed having a truck and went to a 2012 Frontier. It handled great, felt great, and had power. It was small and the bed was small because I had the four door. I couldn't take how small it was and traded it in a couple of months ago for a 2012 Titan. Greatest decision I have made since 2008. Man I missed the look, feel, power, and size of the Titan.

i had a 2001 frontier. 4 cyl reg cab 5 speed bare bones. loved it. drove it for 11 years and probably couldve gotten another 11 out of it. i was bored with it and wanted something with some balls. thats why i got a titan ;)

I've had both as well as a hard body. The HB was the most reliable, followed by the Frontier and then the Titan. But not a big spread between them - no trouble at all, ever, with the HB or Frontier, and brakes, exhaust manifold and seals on the Titan. So there's that. The HB & Frontier were easier to drive in the parking lot. The gas mileage was negligible.

Other than that, the Titan is superior in every way. More comfortable. More options. Better towing. More versatile. I'm on my 2nd Titan, so I would do it again. There's a huge difference in interior space.

I am very happy with the Titan.
Personally, I would take the Titan over the Frontier, any day of the week.
Not all that keen on the Frontier's looks.

For mid-sized, I prefer the looks of the Suzuki Equator (no longer make) or the Toyota Tacoma.
For full size, I would go with the Titan.
I have owned 2x Tacoma trucks, and they were excellent.

im confused. you don't like the frontiers looks but you like the looks of the equator? its the same truck.lol
