Hello everyone. I'm a new here. Currently drive a 2000 F-150 Supercab and will be in the market for a new truck in the next 6-10 months. I know that's a ways off but after 6 years, the time has come to obsess about something new. Obviously the fact that I'm here tells you that I really like the Titan; for all of the same reasons that you all have them... I don't just my truck for work, just a daily driver, occasional light hauling and carting the kids around. What ever make I choose, it will be a crew cab/double cab and at the moment, the two front runners are the Titan CC 2wd LE and the new Tacoma DC TRD Sport. For me one major pros with the Tacoma is the manual transmission....Enjoy the interactive driving.

So here's my question: Did anyone look at the Tacoma while shopping for their new toy? What made you choose the Titan?

I look forward to your input.

Yes, I looked at the Tacoma before I picked up my Titan. I actually traded in a Tacoma for my Titan. Both the Tacoma and Titan are great trucks, and you will be very happy with either one of them. The only thing I can tell you is this...Toyotas are expensive. You will get more bang for your buck with a Titan, plus the Titan is a full size truck, much bigger and more powerfull than the Tacoma. I think the Tacomas may be faster but the Titan has bigger towing and payload capacities and also gives a better ride. Once again, both are great trucks.

I don't know about what kind, if any, first year bugs the 05 Tacoma has, so you might research and consider that before springing for the Tacoma. Ditto baseballfanz and vw for all the positives about the Titan over the Tacoma, especially since for the most part, all the growing pains the Titan had are pretty much gone in the 2006 Titan.

Did you drive the Tacoma as well? I test drove the Tacoma DC TRD Sport 6-speed manual yesterday and was somewhat disappointed with the acceleration. Thought it would have more kick. However, I have heard that the auto trans Tacoma has better acceleration than the manual so I'll have to drive that too. With all of the talk here about how fast the Titan's are compared to other full size and whooping on the likes of Hemis and the sort. Although the Titan is 1k lbs heaver than the Tacoma, it also has 60+ more hp. I do wonder which is faster...

I looked at Tacomas too. They do cost $$$!!! The Titan KC had enough room for my kids in back and with incentives and all... good deals to be had!

Btw, I do agree that the Tacoma is great truck. And it IS bigger than past versions. Titan was just the one for me. :)

Dislocate your shoulder or tear your ACL sometime and you may change your mind about the interactive part. Either one of these injuries makes it next to impossible to drive stick. :(

Yes, the Tacoma is still working out a few bugs but from what I understand, 90% are resolved with 2006. But I will probably end up with a 2007 what ever I choose. By that time both the Titan and Tacoma will be clean I think.

If you are talking 6-10 months, why not wait for the new Tundra (just saying that if you really need a vehicle to haul kids and such also, I would definitely get something with a bigger cab, so for your needs at the moment - Titan....but I would wait and see what the Tundra has to offer)?

Yeah, I have not owned a stick since before my F-150 and I'm still not sure If I want to go that route. May be fun occasionally but I might get sick of it in the So Cal traffic. I'm just not sure. I may still opt for the Auto Tacoma though... Many factors to consider.

Titan vs Tacoma

The Titan is much more truck than the Tacoma, but maybe you don't need that much truck. We do lots of towing and heavy hauling with the Titan and just love it so far. Test drove a Tacoma and for me it just wasn't a option (Titan much more power). As for the stick shift.....don't do it man! City driving and resale sucks....been there done that! Good luck on whatever you choose.

Oh I plan to check out the new Tundra when it debuts at the '06 NAIAS in January :) . From the spy pics though, it looks gigantic and I do not need something that huge. My kids are small so I think they would fit in the back of the Tacoma, for a few years anyway...

My brother has an '05 Tacoma TRD Crew Cab. Its really a nice truck, but its quite a bit smaller than my Crew Cab, and its definately not faster than the Titan. I've had 3 Toyota's so far (all 4Runners, just bought an '05 V8 a few months back) and absolutely love them. But between the Tacoma and the Titan I'd go Titan.

Yo bugs,
The tacoma is not faster than the Titan. Not even the Tacoma X-runner.

Anyways The Titan has alot more going for it.

I have a 99 Tacoma, and looked at a new Taco Crew Cab before I got the Titan.
If they would have haggled at all on the price, I probably would have gone with the Tacoma. It was brand new then, and they weren't going to budge from MSRP.

I love my Titan, but it has huge challenge to match the Tacoma's durability and even though I haven't had any issues, I don't think that's going to happen. Nissan just isn't on Toyota's level. Now that you can probably haggle on a Tacoma, I'd drive both. The Titan is faster, but that was a perk for me, not a day-to-day necessity in a truck (still makes me smile to get on it though!).

Since you're not looking to buy immediately, it might be worthwhile to hang back and wait for more solid info on the Tundra. It's going to have to be bigger than the current one since the new Tacoma is nearly Tundra sized.

Tacoma-slower-smaller- more expensive but +3 mpg-probably more reliable

The downside for ther Tacoma is -a lot smaller-a bit slower-and it will actually cost more to buy(a 4x4 Tacoma CC could cost $28000+TTL-a Titan SE 4X4 more like $26000+ttl).
The upside will be mpg-the Tacoma(V-6) will be about 3 mpg better on average. It will also probably be more reliable. Now a lot of what is measure on reliability surveys is stuff like loose trim, window not working etc-not things that are really serious. The Titan does well on the motor-trans-drivetrain part of CR's survey-it is the minor systems that cause it to be downrated. The rear end failures on the Titan probably aren't a huge problem, and might have been resolved sometime during 2005 production.
I have had 6 Toyotas-they were very reliable-kinda dull,but reliable.The Titan is a fun to drive truck!Luck,Charlie

maybe its just me, but i think that you are comparing two different types of truck. if you want something like a tacoma, you should be comparing that to the frontier. those are both mid-size trucks. if you think that the tundra DC is too big, then the TITAN CC will be too big also.

you mention the better gas mileage in the Tacoma's V6 but Toyota also recommends Premium fuel which in terms of cost per gallon and MPG brings the two rather close. And I do have a bit of a lead foot so I tend to over spend on gas.

No, not the current Tundra, I don't care much for the interior. I'm referring to the Tundra redesign for 2007. Suppose to be real big, maybe even bigger than the Titan.

Stick in traffic sucks A$$... I think Tacomas are great but a little too much $$$. Just don't get a stick unless you REALLY love the interactive driving. Remember, it aint a porsche/beemer/vette so how much do you really need/want a manual. I drove a truck with stick from ages 16-23 in seattle and socal (burbank area) traffic and it SUCKS. Sticks are for "weekend" coupes that you take on empy roads :D

My .02.

What vehicles do they recommend running premium fuel? Our '05 4Runner V8 recommends regular unleaded.

This is how I'd rate them on a 10 point must system and in order of importance to me:

........................................Tacoma / Titan
PERFORMANCE/FUN...............10 / 9
STYLE................................10 / 9
BUILD QUALITY....................10 / 8
RELIABILITY........................10 / 8
SEATING/INTERIOR SPACE..... 8 / 10
PRICE.................................8 / 10
GAS...................................10 / 9
CARGO................................8 / 10

TOTALS................................74 / 73

It's very close but the Tacoma ranks higher in the categeories at the top of my list.
Interesting...

My Dad has a loaded 2002 4X4 Tundra with Basoni exhaust and it's one heck of a nice truck. I bought a Titan because it was much cheaper and I really like it. The Tundra rides smoother and drives a little better, but every time I stomp on the LOUD petal, I'm immediatly reminded why I like the Titan.
