Towing Capacity Clarification Please!

I have a 2008 Nissan Titan V8 Pro4x.. It has been modified with aftermarket Rancho suspension and Firestone inflatable airbags.. It has a 7 pin wire harness connector and towing side mirrors. The code on the door jamb says the rear axle is a CC 33. There is no visible stickers to indicate the gear ratio. I read that a way to confirm that it is a 3.36 gear ratio is to take it up to 70 MPH and if the RPMs hover at 2000, then you do in fact have the 3.36 gear ratio designed for better towing. My truck stayed dead on 2000 RPMs with the cruise control maintaining 70 MPH... With all this said my truck has a GVRW of 7200.. What else can i do (if anything) to this truck to get it to pull 9000 + pounds like its big tow package counterpart?? Any input would be appreciated! Thx

I'm probably overthinking this but I just want to be sure that I can Safely tow a TT with a dry weight of at least 5800 pounds.. I would love to be able to tow a TT with with a dry weight of 7000 pounds But i Fear that may be too much for this truck. The reason I only mention dry weight is because I intend to store this trailer just a few miles from my land where i will camp.. There will be no passengers, water weight, or cargo when in tow. What do you think is the most weight I can safely tow given this scenario??

Here is a picture a the previous owner using it to tow what looks to be a 9000 pound skid steer.. Unfortunately I just happened to come across this image when i located my truck on this site when researching its history.. I have no other info.

All Pro4x have 3.36 gears, you are good for about 9200-9300 pounds, regardless of what the GVRW is.

Did you check the rear diff snout for a sticker indicating the ratio? Is that the sticker you reference as being nonexistent?

Not sure what the deal is with the GVWR, but GVWR isn't related to tow rating other than it is the max gross weight and you have to keep vehicle plus payload plus tongue weight below that number. Don't confuse GVWR with GCWR, which is Gross Combined Weight Rating, which would include trailer and vehicle weight. Towing capacity is GCWR minus vehicle weight and payload weight.

But if you have the 3.36 gears (and it seems incomprehensible you don't, based on your truck being a Pro4X and running 2k at 70), you can tow up to the higher tow limit, minus your people and gear in the truck weight.

Ok... thanks for the reply..That helps..Yes the sticker has been painted over on the rear Diff...

Part of the confusion is stemming from Nissan's towing guide (http://www.nissanusa.com/pdf/techpubs/2008/2008NissanTowingGuide.pdf) that lists my truck as being able to tow only 7000# with a GCWR of 13000#.. It is only listing my truck (Crew Cab) under long wheel base.. I'm no mechanic but I don't think I have a long wheel base.. Why is the short wheel base blank? Also, If all Pro4X trucks come with 3.36 gear ratio.. then why are they not all rated to tow 9000+ pounds? I feel confident with all the feedback and research that towing a dry 5500 pound TT with standard cargo will be perfectly fine.. But you can see why I am sooo confused by the literature put out by Nissan. Seems too cryptic for the average layman.

Honestly, even if you call or email Nissan their customer service people are confused too, they don't know what packages can tow what weight, but your picture above does state with out tow package, with tow package (depending on the year, it goes by different names and has different options) it should be listed to tow 9000 + pounds. Each truck can pull a slightly different load based on add ones, for instance, a 4wd will tow less due to having extra weight added for the front transfer case.

Being a CC, with that toolbox and front bumper the truck's also going to be heavier than my KC (same year, Pro4). Like dubyam said, your tow rating depends on how much shyte you put in the truck.

If your GCWR is 13000 then your towing capacity = 13000 - (truck weight + gear/people)

Now that I am thinking about it.. I have no reason to believe that I don't have the tow package.. I think we have established that it is a 3.36 gear ratio. it has the tow mirrors. There is 7 pin connector and heavy duty tow hitch installed..I believe I have the tranny temp gauge below the speedo gauge.. What evidence is there that I can't or shouldn't tow more than 7000 pounds?

None. You have the BT package. 2k RPM's at 70 is all you need to know that. If you have 3.36 gears you can tow higher amount. All the other stuff doesn't really matter (except the hitch class, I guess).

If you really want to know what you can yow, load up your truck like you'd have it when towing (gear, safety stuff, snacks, etc.) and roll down to a local truck stop with scales. Weigh the truck, and then you can back out your tow capacity with all your mods. The comment above about your bumper and other goodies is pertinent. That's going to knock a bit off your total towing capacity. Safety first!

If you have the trans temp gauge, its a dead give away you have the Big-Tow package. No other way around it.

ALL titans came with the trailer hitch, and 7-pin wiring. My 05 KC XE (base model, even had crank windows), had a trailer hitch and 7-pin harness.

Wrong, I have the trans temp gauge and don't have the big tow package

Eventually the transmission temperature gauge was standard I believe. But not in '07.

Nope. The sticker is on the snout of the diff. Passenger side.

Or you could just get on the highway, do 70mph, and see if you're around 1750rpm (2.94) or 2050 (3.36).

Looks like highway it is. Found one other sticker anywhere on the diff and it was on top, caked in black stuff debris. Pulled it off(it was halfway falling off anyway) and scraped the black off it. Only to find a barcode. Will pay attention to rpms tomorrow on the way to work.

I do have the tow mode button though. Is that not a give away?
Also been noticing people talking about towing in 4th gear, so I have a few questions. Never really towed too much before.

1. Should I always use tow mode when pulling anything?
2. Should you manually shift gears and never go above 4th?
