where is the airbag diagnosis sensor unit (2007 Titan)?

I've got the flashing-airbag-light problem. Did all the resets found here, to no avail. Took it in, and they replaced the LH tensioner (under warranty), to no avail. Their next recommendation was to replace the diagnosis sensor unit, but told me that it wasn't guaranteed to fix the problem, wasn't covered under warranty, and would cost $700. I declined.

Since then, I've gotten ahold of the service manual, and have read through the instructions on diagnosing the issue. I concur with their assessment (i.e. replacing the diagnosis sensor unit is the next step). There's a place online that has them for $275 (way less than the $400 they quoted me for just the part). The service manual's instructions for replacing the thing look easy (just one page of instructions), but the instructions include a reference to removing the center console.

[ Note that I'm not talking about touching the airbags or anything of the sort. This is just the sensor that diagnoses the airbags. ]

So, when I go to that page in the manual that talks about removing the center console, it's got a diagram that looks nothing like my center console (mine is just the console between the seats; the one they show goes all the way to the dash and has the shifter in it), and mentions nothing further about things like the airbag diagnosis sensor unit.

So, my question: where (exactly) is the airbag diagnosis sensor unit located? Is it reasonably accessible?

Thanks in advance!

It is under the center console.
Here's a picture of it.

Is there a reason why it's not under warranty?
You have a KC, have you looked at the rear door harness? There's a recall for it, if those wires in the harness is cut, it could cause the airbag light to flash.

Thanks for the picture!

To your question, the dealership says that seat belts have a lifetime warranty, but airbag diagnosis sensors don't. I actually escalated the situation to Nissan (corporate), and they confirmed that the item isn't covered. Or, rather, they told me that they were disinclined to offer "financial support" (I think those were their words) because I don't regularly take my Nissan back to the dealership for service.

[ And really, I'd pay them to fix it if they could guarantee me that this will fix it. The best they can do is tell me this *might* fix it -- and whether it does or not, I'm out $700. That was my motivation for not going ahead with letting the dealer do it. ]

Back to your picture... So, the manual says to remove the center console (and implies that that's enough). Your picture makes me think I have to remove a whole lot more to get to it. Is there a happy medium, or am I really going to need to remove the seats (and maybe more)?

Many thanks, again!

The picture is just something I found, the guy was doing sound dampening but you would only need to remove the center console to get to the module.

Turns out, my center front seat is an option. :) I thought it was standard.

Anyway, took that out and found another small console underneath. Took that off, and voila, the diagnosis module was right there. Took me 20 minutes, with no instructions.

Makes the $700 quote from the dealer all the more egregious, since the whole job (getting to it and replacing it and putting things back) could have been undertaken in less than an hour by somebody who knew what they were doing. :-/

The remaining question is whether it's the diagnosis module or the harnesses.

The problem started one afternoon when somebody got into the passenger seat and moved the seat forward. My gut says its a harness problem, but the service manual says to replace the diagnosis module first. I imagine that's easier than re-running harnesses, yet carries a steep price tag, even at "just" $275.

Thanks again for the help, though -- definitely gave me the confidence to look for the console and get past it!

I've run my fingers along all the exposed parts of the harnesses under the seats, on up to the connectors. I've jiggled and tugged (gently), and everything seems intact.

I also unplugged and replugged the connectors on the diagnosis sensor module.

So far, no joy.

I got the airbag light on the dash to reset (that is, turn off) once, months ago, when this first started to happen. Now, I can only get it into diagnostic mode, and back out. I can never get it to shut totally off. That's why I suspect there's an actual problem. Just don't want to replace a $275 part if it's not the culprit. :)

Klassa, I have recently watch a video where a guy said that moisture can get inside the harnesses and cause the airbag light to go off. He suggested spraying a small amount WD40 or other moisture displacement oil in the harness before reconnecting it. I am going to try this before replacing my module too. Mine is a 2005 KC and I have also tried every ignition trick fix on every message board on the internet to no avail. Don't want to spend the money for it either, but your post at least gives me some hope that I could repair it myself if it comes to that.

Hi LiveWire,

I actually had a separate thread there I described the eventual fix to this problem.

Turns out, it was the (driver-side) harness, and not the diagnostic module. I got the harness from my local dealer (despite vowing never to go back), because there are lots of variations, and they were able to get me the one I needed, by VIN number. I think it was about $80.

Anyway, I replaced the harness, and after a few minutes (don't recall if I had to try the airbag-light-reset sequence or not), the airbag light turned off, and has been off ever since.

For me, what finally clued me in to the fact that it had to be the harness, was that my door jamb switch stopped working, and my rear speaker (on the driver's side) started to be intermittent. The only thing those two things -- and the airbag system -- have in common, is the wiring harness that runs from under the dash, past the driver's seat (under the plastic kick plate), and into the back door.

HTH!

That actually helps tremendously! Thanks for posting that...my passenger side door jamb switch has recently stopped working also. I am getting the blink code of 1 long blink , 1 fast blink and then 5 fast blinks, but I haven't found a thread on decoding the blink codes for the Titan. I suspect it's the passenger side and this new info helps to confirm, but would still love to be sure without having to pay the dealer to tell me. I also found out that the bottom of my seatbelt on the passenger side has no protective cover, which surprised me. Might have to look into that to be sure nothing is being kicked loose down there.
Anyway, thanks again!
