I've had my titan almost 6 months now. It has about 4000 miles. I have formed some likes and dislikes and wondered how you guys felt. My thinking is that someone at Nissan might read our honest opinions and incorporate some of them into the next generation if not too late already.
LIKES
  1. Engine power - broad torque and great revving
  2. Big back sliding window down
  3. Dual front window auto up/down
  4. Control layout
  5. Drivers view out
  6. Interior room
  7. Interior lighting
  8. Rockford stereo
  9. Finned differential cover
  10. Power assist tailgate
  11. Exterior styling
  12. Overall handling performance

COULD BE BETTER (DISLIKES)
  1. No integral brake controller
  2. No air volume control on rear air ($1 change in design?)
  3. Rear seems to sag a bit much with normal towing
  4. Needs a 6 speed tranny
  5. Interior while nice looks great until you see a new Ford
  6. No glovebox light
  7. Havent found use for that compartment in the rear driver fender
  8. No e-locker on 2WD
  9. Gas mileage could be better
  10. Jigglyness when slowing down going over small bumps
  11. Key FOB buttons too easily pushed when in pocket
  12. Paint seems thin
  13. Bumper metal seems thin
  14. Garage opener in mirror not lit or raised for easy finding (I put on rubber tit thing)
  15. No electric lock option for tailgate

Well what do you think? I enjoy my truck and feel like it is special compared to the big 3. Lots of personality and more fun to drive than just about all the other trucks I have had in my life...I think I have had about 8 total. UPDATE: I forgot a dislike...its the center console lid opening to the side instead of straight up:)

1. integrated brake controller 2. 6 speed tranny 3. back up camera 4. better MPG's (ethanol has a big part in it). 5. interior plastic scratches when you sneeze. 6. integrated turn signal/puddle lamps in mirors. 7. full rear window rolls down (not split). 8.cooled seats. These are my dislikes... future option wish list.

Literally, the only things I don't like about this truck are the f'ing cooling system, open rear diff and the lack of a manual transmission...I have not a single other complaint...

Oh and a nice to have would be the WOT restriction removed from the factory...

It's time for a redo. And it depends on the model Titan you have because I have an 08 PRO-4X and my glovebox is lit. I also have to disagree with the rear end sagging too much....although I'll admit others agree with you. If it's sagging too much, you're overloading it or not set up correctly.

Hopefully we'll get a totally new Titan soon. Until then, I think it holds up well against all the new trucks out there...considering it's a 7 year old design.

got my dad's 2010 for the week, mine's at home. I must say, everything about the 2010 owns the 2005. Interior plastics are black not grey, and everything seems more refined.. guages, seating position etc.. wish it had a brake controller tho but im not sure if any 1/2 tons have that...

2005> 2010 for keyfob, the pictures are tanish not white, buttons too easily pushed, and the horn sounds lame. my 2005 has the loudest damn horn in the whole neighborhood...

I miss my bench seat from my 2004 XE. It was more comfortable than the captain chairs.

Other than that, no complaints. If I don't like something I'll add it later.

The quarter panel locker is perfect for storing the tie down cleats.
No glove box light? Really? I got one in my LE.
Gas mileage? It's a truck.
"Jigglyness when slowing down going over small bumps" Really? Just go faster.
After you drive it a few days, your hand goes right to the garage door opener button. I promise!
"Interior while nice looks great until you see a new Ford". No way. I drive a 2010 Ford 1/2 ton at work and I hate the interior.
The "No electric lock option for tailgate", there's a mod for that. Just do a forum search.

The next gen Titan is probably all locked up, but here are a few things I like and dislike about the current Titan.

Likes...

1. Engine. Even at Nissan's pitiful "317"hp rated figure, it still holds its own against the new generation 1/2 ton powertrains. I think the only trucks that can beat it in similar configuration is Ford's new Ecoboost V6, their 411hp 6.2L, the 403hp 6.2L from GM and the Tundra 5.7L. Of course, a properly equipped 5.7L Hemi might give it a good run too. However, that's pretty good considering it's the standard no cost engine that's been practically unchanged since '04 except for VVT and a slightly improved exhaust.

2. Design. The body design is unique and copies from nothing else I can think of except the concept prototype Nissan introduced back in the early 2000's. It's getting a little dated, but it still looks modern and stylish even after 8 full model years. In fact, I can see a lot of Titan design in the new GMT 900 trucks especially the GMC Sierra. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then I guess GM even thought the Titan was good design since they basically copied it for their trucks . Also, the Titan doesn't seem to look as bloated and heavy as the Tundra which doesn't seem to be aging as gracefully as the Titan IMO. The Titan looks lean and taut, but not overdone and bloated.

3. Interior. I know a lot of people here hate the interior design, but I love it. It's one the cleanest designs in any truck. I'll take a clean design over an overstyled overdone car-like interior any day. It looks like how a truck interior should look like. I don't like when manufacturers try to make their 1/2 ton truck interiors look like car interiors. I like the center pod design element with the radio and HVAC controls in the middle. It's very clean and functional and balanced as well. In comparison, the instrument panel in the Tundra looks like a complete mess with no form or symmetry.

4. Locking tailgate with assist. I don't know if the other trucks have that feature standard now, but when I got my Titan you couldn't get that feature at any cost on some trucks. Also, the standard cruise control was a nice feature until Nissan eliminated it from their decontenting process a few years later. However, it made the base Titan XE a pretty good value back in '05 compared to the competition.

5. Engine compartment design. Take a look at a new F-150 engine compartment and you'll know what I'm talking about. What a mess. The battery is mounted at a crooked angle. The engine is covered by hoses and plastic intake tubes criss crossing all over the place. They don't even come with an engine "beauty cover" to cover up the mess. The Titan engine compartment looks like a design masterpiece in comparsion.

Dislikes...

1. The 20 x 8" wagon wheels on the premium models. The 20's look nice, but at only 8" are way too skinny for the Titan. Nissan needs to up their factory 20" wheels to 9" in overall width.

2. Tailight design. It's time for Nissan to tweak the tailight design on the Titan. They should flare them out a little like what Toyota did on the Tundra. It would make the back of the Titan look a little wider which is a good thing.

3. Fender flares. The only nitpick I have about the Titan design is the lack of fender flares. I'm talking about the ones that are stamped into the sheet metal like the F-150 and Frontier. This would give the Titan a much more rugged and aggressive appearance. Of course, any sheetmetal changes now would be prohibited since the tooling has long been amortized by now. However, it would have been a good idea to incorporate fender flares in the original design. Hopefully on the next gen Titan, they'll add some fender flares into the sheetmetal.

4. 6sp transmission. The old 5sp is an excellent tranny, but it's time to upgrade to a 6sp unit to keep up with the competition. A 7 or 8sp would be even better for the next gen Titan and something which Nissan could brag about.

5. Factory HID lighting on the premium Titan models.

6. Door handle gaskets that don't turn milky white after 1.5 years. Why not just make them out of thin rubber or something? Or, perhaps use a better grade plastic than the 1 liter soda bottle recyled plastic crap they're currently using??

7. A provision to turn off the factory TPMS so I don't have to look at that stupid dash light if I want to run less than 28 psi in my rear tires. I've got 28 psi exactly in my rear tires and the centers of the crapyears are wearing almost to the wear bands while the corners still have some meaty tread left.

8. Dual VVT. Half stepping it with VVT on the intake side might have been acceptable back in '07, but today Nissan needs to add VVT to the exhaust cams as well. And, while they're at it, provide some type of cylinder shutdown feature to up the dismal fuel mileage figures on the Endurance.

Excellent points sir. All of them. Even the dislikes. It'd be nice if we could get Nissan to listen, but I'm sure they've convened a focus group like all other motor companies to tell us what we want.

These are all great opinions and I love the one about hitting all the buttons for the garage door opener. For me, the button feels like any other button on the mirror and not being lit, almost impossible for me to hit until the little stickon rubber bumper thinging. Now I can go by tactile feel or simply look at it. Also, I have the SE as you can see in my signature.

I like my Titan more now then when it was new. I don't notice the rattles anymore I think many rattled themselves out and the engine seems smoother and peppier then ever.

Overall, I really like the truck.

My only dislikes are as follows:
Needs a 6 speed trans
Current trans seems to work like a brake (it seems to drag) when you let off the gas, so I always keep a little pressure on the gas.
The big tow mirrors seemed hard to adjust to where you dont have blind spots
black interior to hard to keep clean
My biggest dislike is that I had to pay for new alignment cam bolts to get a proper alignment on a 2010 with 11K on it.

i like how she engine brakes when you let off, works good with a trailer, helps save on brakes a little

Isn't it interesting to see that some things folks like, others don't like? That brings up the idea of compromise and the dilemma of engineering to make the truck look and perform for a certain type of consumer. For example, one owner likes the slow down when you let off the gas, another prefers a free-wheeling feeling when you let off the gas. There really is a lot to think about. Personally, I always am suspect of car companies that brag about how great their engineering is. I would say that if I were going to build a car, I would get in front of hundreds of potential buyers or owners of existing model and ask them what they wanted. Then I would strive to give it to them with my products.

If we are doing it about OUR T and not just T's in general then...

Dislikes: No heated seats, no power locks/windows, no cruise control, poor gas mileage, no heated exterior mirrors, no rain sensing windshield wipers, crappy headlights, no power adjustable seats, no garage door opener on my mirror, and no way to turn the traction control off (that I know of)

Likes: Tons of storage, vinyl floors so very easy for me to wash out, low cost and low maintenance, goes anywhere no matter the weather.

I wish the shifter was on the column and give extra center console room, OR mount the DVD player somewhere other than the center console. The console is already small and now that the dvd player is installed inside I have very little room left over. Most other cars/trucks the dvd player is integrated with the screen thats mounted on headliner. Now my kid bugs me driving down the street to change dvd's, what a pain.

I like most everything else, but this should really be considered at one level or another.

Oh yeah, my glove box has no light in it, so at night I cant see inside it. Needs to be a light like most other cars/trucks.

French cars are like that. Thank Mr. Ghosn.

You mentioned a couple of items I forgot and one question.

  • No electric lock option for tailgate (YES THIS SHOULD BE STANDARD, especially on the SL)
  • Gas mileage could be better (SUX!!!!!!, but most trucks do)
  • I wish the compartment on back lower wheel was designed like the Avalance (I used to drive one and loved that part)
  • Mine has prewired break controller for a tailor, is this what you are talking about?
  • Mine has rear air vents with manual volume control.
  • Power assist tailgate (what is this?)
