Big Tow towing vs. non-big tow

Hi All,

We need help on this much debated topic. Do you need the big rear end with lower gears in order to get the increased towing capacity? I was told by dealer that adding transmission fan and cooler would increase our towing capacity to 9500. With that said: if towing capacity is still at 7500, what would be the recommended max dry weight in travel trailer to pull, if increase was the truth..what would be max dry weight of trailer then? We called Nissan, because we are upset..haven't gotten a straight answer yet.

So with that said...what do you people without the big tow package pull..in terms of dry weight in a travel trailer? We saw in the manual that Titans are approved for 5th wheel towing..but we aren't going there because of pin weight.

Thanks..

I belive the non-tow Titan is rated to tow 7500lbs, the tow package Titan can go as high as 9500 lbs.
What do you plan on towing? If it's going to be a utility trailer, or motorcycle trailer, then fine, but if you want to move heavy metal, get the tow package.

Lower gears...better for the trans.
Tow mirrors...safer for towing
Factory hitch...already installed, along with tow relays.
Factory trans temp gauge...more driver info while towing

To be honest, it's a no-brainer if you're really going to tow.

Yep, that is Big Tow, sometimes just called Tow Package in the literature. XE does not have ext. mirrors in 06, may have in 07, I don't know. It was called "VX35", salesman didn't know correct details.

Another advantage with the BT Gearing is the engine speed is kept higher, thus giving a bit more charging ability, braking capability, cooling, HP, etc.

Tow package sounds more mature then "Big Tow"...

I have a 06 KC with Nissan installed tow bar and Leer cap. I have a 29 foot Rockwood trailer 6700 empty. I just completed our first trip from Myrtle Beach to Lake Worth Fla. and back, 1400 miles- no Big Tow and had no problems pulling with a Reese Hitch. Got between 9-11 mpg using cruise @ 60 mph. Truck had plenty of power to haul the load on I-95

Does the tow package include a tranny cooler and/or oil cooler?

The trailer I am looking at is 88% of the towing capacity. Unloaded weight is 7500 and with my family "stuff" we are around 8300#.

Is the coolers something I should add soon?
All titans have the tranny cooler, engine oil cooler, and tow/haul mode. The tow package just adds a tranny temp gauge, hitch, extendable mirrors ('cept XE models), lower gearing, and HD battery. You can add the hitch, a tranny temp gauge and mirrors no problems. The difficult part would be changing the gears. With what you're towing, go with the tow package.

I hope your trailer dealer told you the weight is BEFORE options. Just about everything is an option on trailers especially toy boxes. On a toy box the double rear bunks are options, so is the generator, larger fridge, diamond plate, ect. Toy boxes are about 1200 lbs heavier then the sticker says.

I would suggest checking with your insurance company to make sure they will cover you if you truck is OVERWEIGHT according to manufacture specs. There is a good chance they will not due to the truck being misused. That would be an expensive lesson to learn the hard way.

Get the tow package...... You will want those gears.

Let's go hit the 138 to Palmdale and see you try to go 60 towing that trailer. I went up it at 60 on thursday, at 5500 rpm, with tow package.

Ok,

Actually it was Nissan service that told me to add tranny cooler, etc and that we could pull 9500. So are we suggesting that they don't know their product? I am confused. All I want to do is tow a camper with a dry weight of about 6k. I will ask again: What are you guys out there without the tow package towing in dry weight? In campers in particular?

I have a 26' Coachmen TT that weighs around 7000# with all of the gear in it for a trip. I have had no problems towing it around, but I have the tow package.

I have heard that you should not exceed 80% of the tow rating for the total weight when towing. If my math is correct, 80% of 7500# is right around 6000#.

That's correct, they don't know their own product!!
ALL Titans have 2 factory trans coolers, one is the same type that uses the radiator like every other auto trans car and truck, and the second is an aux cooler like the type you would buy and install for towing.

If you have not bought the truck, try to find one that has the Tow Package, it's that simple You can't "cobble" a package togather that will match all the features, and re-sale will be better.

tow package has the mirrors, the bigger rear gear and a hitch.
AND a factory trans temp gauge! Not some plastic Pep-Boys looking thing that you have to drill into the dash to mount...

When loaded with the C5 Corvette and dirt bike on the car hauler with spare tires, tools etc in the rear of my 04 2WD LE with tow package (mode button) squats a little causing my lights to appear to be on high beam. What is a better fix, air bag suspension or a weight distribution tow hitch with sway bar :dunno:

You need the W/D hitch to tow over 5000 lbs. So you probably need that AND the bags.

Just an update guys. I really don't think Nissan knows their product. I called another service department(a Nissan one) for comparison purposes and this guy told me that a package that costs right around $400 could be installed to boost tow capacity on our SE non tow titan to the full 9500. But, He said it could not be done on the XE's. It really makes me mad that there is such confusion over this truck. We will add whatever we can to the truck to help keep it cool, but we don't plan on pulling more than 6k. We may even go to a HD truck. This may have been our first and only Titan. We love the truck, but Nissan and its sales people need to get their act together. Telling customers that every nissan on the lot can tow 9500 #'s is just pure crap.

Thanks for all the input..Have a great weekend..

plain and simple, the 4.10 drivetrain can handle 9,500 lbs.
the smaller gear can handle 7,500 lbs.

If you have CC or 4x4 it lowers it because those options are heavier in the truck. If you want 9,500 lbs, you'll just need a new ring/pinion gear in the back.

Personally, I would find the VIN code that means 4.10 axle and find a wrecked titan at a junkyard... or you could just ask your nissan service department to change it out.... either just the gear or the whole rear end.

Googling came up with this article, it gives some info.

"We had the guys at Dynatrac set ours up with 4.56:1 gearing from Yukon Gear. We left the diff carrier open for now because industry buzz at the time suggested that a totally new electric locker was nearing production from Detroit Locker. More on that in a future article. "

http://www.fourwheeler.com/projectbuild/129_0601_2004_nissan_titan_replacing_front_ifs/

watch the spacing, that's a link. I really don't know a damned thing about replacing gears or diffs, but I want to be helpful if I can.

This is sooo simple:

The tow package has lower gears giving you the 9500lb tow rating....PERIOD.

The engine cooling is the same for ALL Titans..as already stated several times...
The tranny cooling is the same for ALL Titans...as already stated several times...

Mirrors, gauges, bigger battery, won't increase the tow rating!

You want the 9500 lb tow rating? Get a truck with Tow Package...Even if you find a junk yard rear end, the PCM would also need to be changed.

DONE...
