Rear axle seal leak.... Oy.

Well the title says it all. Happened recently, and so far it's made one small spot on the left rim and only a smudge on the right rotor. Not happy.:soap:

Anyways, my real question. Can I keep topping off the diff oil until I get the money to fix it? I'm mechanically inclined, but definitely not comfortable doing the bearing swap myself.

Also, how much would a dealer vs. seperate shop charge? I'll be getting more mobil 1 75w140 tomorrow, but I'd like to know what this is gonna cost me...

Thanks guys

I've looked into it, just trying to consolidate most of those threads lol. Also trying to see if anyone who hasn't spoken about it, will help me out...

If you allow it to leak for a long time you will probably need to replace your parking brake shoes also.

If you have alternate transportation, you can pull the shaft and take it to a shop with the new seal and bearing and they should be able to cut the old bearing off and press the new one on pretty inexpensively. Like maybe $40. $30 for the bearing $25 for the seal. A can of brake cleaner. So around $100 should take care of it. Maybe $200 if you let the shop do the whole thing. More if the axle shaft is damaged or the parking brake shoes need to be replaced. Double that (or more) at the dealer.

How much is involved in pulling the shaft? I have a lot of tools, and I am not necessarily afraid to tackle a job like this, but I bet there is an axle-puller tool that I will need to get the job done, correct?

I just had one replaced at the dealer. My extended warrenty covered all but my $50 deductable of it. Total cost for just one side would have been 341 plus tax. My dealer charges 2 shop hours to change one side but had it done in prolly half that time. So for both sides at my dealer u would expect to pay around 700 for both sides

I think I'll let a shop handle this one. I don't want to touch anything with the driveline right now. I'll probably make it worse... Thanks for chiming in guys, I really appreciate it.

What shop? and where did you get the kit? I need both of mine replaced

Did you do the vent mod prior to the leak?

#12 ·
They fix them under the warranty or extended warranty. The 2008+ trucks have larger axle shafts and different axle bearings and seals, and don't seem to have the problem. They did issue a TSB to replace entire shaft/seal/bearing assembly as a unit instead of just replacing seal & bearing, but that does not seem to help, just costs alot of money. Replacing the check valve rear axle vent with a hose vent may help if you have not done that already. Also, you can try a little oil resistant RTV (e.g. Permatex Ultra Black) around the outer periphery of the axle seal prior to re-installing the shaft.

Just had a lift installed today, and the tech told me that my rear axle is leaking. I've decided that any replacements on the truck would be upgrades. What are my options? Will the TruTrac fix the issue altogether?

TrueTrac replaces the differential carrier, side gears, and spider gears with a limited slip differential. Installing a TruTrac requires pulling the axle shafts. The service manual says that the axle seals should be replaced any time the axle shafts are removed. Replacing the seals requires destructive removal and replacement of the axle bearings. So as posted above, it makes sense to replace the axle seals and bearings at the same time as a TrueTrac is installed.

I am not aware of any "upgrade" for an axle seal leak, except replacement of the entire rear axle assembly with a 2008+ rear axle assembly, which uses larger diameter axle shafts and different seals which don't seem to be leak prone as are the 2004-2007 seals. I don't know that there are any aftermarket axle seals. Somebody posted that the ones from National don't fit.

You can replace the oem check valve with a hose vent, but people still get axle seal leaks after doing that, but it does eliminate pressurizing the seals because the check valve gets plugged up.

Real axle seal leaking and maybe rearend trouble. Need some expert advice.

Ok guys I have a 2004 Nissan titan se 4x4 crew cab and I absolutely have loved this truck but I might have some major problems and only a week before bass fishing season starts. I have taken good care of this truck and it has been good to me up until about a couple of days ago. I did not know about the rearend problems that the 04 and 05 titans have had until I researched the internet a couple of days ago. And what made me research the net was I was on my way home from work and my truck just jerked a little while I was driving down the road at about 55 mph. First I thought the transmission may have slipped since I was going up a hill. I checked the tranny fluid and everything was ok so I got on the internet and started reading about all the rearend problems a lot of people were having. So I go outside and sure enough the drivers side rear wheel is soaked in rearend oil. I have always kept the truck serviced and its just hit 100k miles about a week ago. I have pulled a bass boat with it for the past three years on average about 8 times a year other than that its all highway miles as I never go offroading or anything. I checked the rearend oil and ended up putting a quart in it and drove it for the past 2 days with no problems. Im going to change the rearend oil tomorrow and see if there is any metal in the oil. Im 45 years old and know very little about mechanics except I know how to change all the fluids in my vehicles and things like that but I know very little on major problems. Do some of you guys that know about this problem think that I can just change the rearend oil and do the check valve hose modification and get by with that? How hard is the axle seal to change? Sorry for the questions but I need to try to fix my truck and I want to do it the best, cheapest route ( I guess everybody wants to take that route). I dont have 4 grand to give nissan to change the whole rearend so I would like some suggestions from you guys that have been thru this, I really like my truck and want to get another 100k out of it. It still looks almost new, no rust, plenty of power, I mean I like this truck to much to get rid of it. I have been reading that a lot of people have had this problem, looks like nissan would do a recall. I also have exhaust leaks so I take it that nissan has a problem with the headers cracking. Im going to have to fix that to. I have changed the oil and had it serviced just like I was supposed to but I guess this rearend thing was going to happen regardless. Any help from you guys on what to do would be greatly appreciated and I need to do it pretty quick. Right now it drives smooth but there is a leak on the driver side rear wheel and that jerk I felt a couple of days ago worries me especially pulling a boat down the highway.

Nice to see someone put a kit up for sale to save lazy guys like me a few minutes. Thanks

I had the drivers side rear axle seal leak, got charged just under $500.00 by dealer to repair. I put the vent mod on the rear end, hoping to prevent future trouble. The vent was obviously blocked and would not allow pressure back in at all. I got a fitting from Toyota that fits perfectly, added fuel line, and a filter on top. I put together a cheap kit of all parts and have it on Ebay. Saves you having to run around, order the part, etc. $25.00. Ebay # 321029509698. Took 15 minutes to install. PM me for more information or check ebay. PS: Nissan consumer affairs blew me off after telling me to take it to a dealer for diagnosis and repair. Asked to fax them the repair order and invoice, nothing. They say theres no problem. HA!
My local Nissan dealership can kiss my white American butt. I went to pick up the replacement parts to do my rear axle seals, and the 40 some year old parts dude smarted of saying if I had a Chevy that it would have been leaking way before the 88k mile marker. I have owned several GM products and new once had a problem with rear axle seals leaking. And they had many well over 200K on the originals with no problems when I got rid of them. Whether you like GM vehicles or not, IMO you need to keep your mouth shut if you don't know what the heck you are talking about.

Did mine in half a day, cost of $175 total. Took me a bit longer because the old man at the machine shop doing my pressing work decided to take a nap after lunch before he got around to doing them. Dealership wanted $900 to do both sides... I laughed in the phone and they thought it was rude...lol

I am going to check out your vent mod kit, I get lazy sometime and go with kits.

I just realized this dude selling the kits only has 2 posts. Hope he's legit.

I just noticed that too. But I was already thinking I was just going to fab up my own anyway by the time I seen your post. Figure 1 and figure 4 pictures are shown on the ebay add that are ones from the the HOW TO thread:

http://www.titantalk.com/forums/titan-faq-howto-area/28334-axle-vent-issue-solution.html

He has good ebay rating, so it seems like you are in the clear this time. I am sure he just took the idea and said to himself that there are a lot of people that will need something like this because of all the failures, why not put a kit together and sell it.

Not talking smack, because taking one guy's idea and turning it into cash is how business's have been started and such. Looks to me he seen that there was a market for this mod after doing his own, and figured he could make some cash off of it. Helps out those ones that just don't have the time to run to the parts stores to get everything, or have the knowledge, feeling lazy and what not, or just wanting that simple solution where everything is already put together for them.

jmadas, don't take offense to this at all. A join date of 11/23/12 and 2 post make people suspicious. Like another said, about time someone decided to provide a kit. Now if you put one together that is out of some steel braided line with the connection to the axle and a filter that screws on. I might be down for the purchase then. That's if I don't make it first....lol

Mine used to leak badly until I put the locker in last year and started running 80 90 gear oil, wonder if the thicker oil has keeped it from leaking.

#33 ·
Yeah after seeing the 2 post thing I checked eBay and he's bought and sold quite a few things with no negative feedback, so that made me feel a lil better

Update! Got my package today. Came pretty fast, and exactly as described with installation instructions with pics. Sure did make things simple for me. No running around getting parts. I would highly recommend this pre made kit to anyone who hasn't done the vent mod yet.
