I noticed the MPG was down and did the ECU reset, no change, SES light still on.

I had to go past the Dealer today so stopped and they checked it out, said the MAF sensor [mass air flow] was not reading correctly and it was running rich. They re-set it and suggested I come back if the SES came back on.

It did.

Dealer said they'd replace it under warranty tomorrow.

MPG is down 2 - 3 miles.

One of the Dealer teks said K&N will cause the MAF sensor to coat with oil. Can't go along with this as the K & N has been on for over 2,500 miles with no issues.

Any ideas?

 

Went to dealer again today. They identified two parts in the intake, one the MAF sensor and one closer to the throttle body.

Did not get the name of that, anyone know?

They claimed the K & N oil, though very slight had interfered with both of these sensors. Not in stock, so they ordered them and will call when ready for install.

Anybody else with this kind of problem?

What's strange is the K & N drop in was installed about 2,500 miles ago? Trouble free till a few days ago?

Wonder if the TBS and CAT back exhaust allows motor to pull - breath harder? This does not seem logical as it's also been over 1,000 miles since the install of the exhaust.

 

04 models also need an ECU reflash for the 02 sensors kicking the SES light on. I just had mine done last Friday.
Over-oiled K&N (or other oiled air filters) will coat the MAF and screw it up. Luckily, I've not heard of any being denied warranty replacement yet.

 

Just got off the phone with the dealer re: the SES light problem.

Was told Nissan has had problems with the sensors that trip the SES light on the dash. In this case the Air Flow Meter [AFM] and the Mass Air Flow Sensor [MAF] are not reading correctly.

The dealer does not know why, but say the K & N may (?) be the issue, in any case they will replace both AFM and MAF under warranty.

Parts are supposed to be in tomorrow.

The service writer indicated this may be a Nissan problem with the AFM and MAF and not be an issue with K & N.

Yep, I've read about that fairly often actually. Not just Nissan either. Those that have the K&N are very LIGHTLY oiling them. Wonder if your K&N came over oiled. But they are not making it up. It can happen.

Mine was replaced...MAF with stock air box on after only 7K. Likely a MAF device problem.

 

mine SES came on in fall 2004. i have all factory parts on my truck. dealer replaced a "vapor canister" or something like that. it is a component of the gas tank system. basically the system was loosing pressure, i.e. leaking. they replaced it and i have not had a SES since.

 

My SES light came on in my 2004 4x4 SE and I went to autozone and the said loose gas cap, tightned cleaned the cap, unhooked battery overnight and the light came on again. Any ideas?

I have read through some of these post, but nothing seems to apply to my situation or I have just missed something...

I haven't had the SES light come on until after I had a Flowmaster 40 series (Single In-Dual Out) put on the 04 Titan. It came on about a day after I had the exhaust put on; had it checked and the result was an Emission Systems Leak. They reset it, but it came one again a few days later - haven't had this one read, but confident it is the same thing.

Is there any mod I can do to prevent the continued recurrence of this?

 

Are you sure it's not your fuel cap loosening up? Is there a possibility that you fueled up during that period?

I know that I need to check mine now when I get fuel. If it loosens up and breaks the seal, the SES light will come on in a day or so and I'll have to reset it.
