Thinking about a TruTrac install---What all do I need?

Just thinking about having someone do it. If I buy a TruTrac off of ebay, what other parts would I need? From reading on all the forum threads---I understand that if the gears have no sign of wear/fatigue, then I could reuse the gears and just have the TruTrac installed? Or should I change the gears also? I have a 2wd and have no plans on leveling, lifting, or installing monster tires. So would the factory gears be ok? Next week I will start calling shops and getting prices together.

Another question, I looked on ebay and there are two different looking TruTrac pictures that fit my truck. Which one of these would I need?

Detroit Truetrac Posi Nissan Titan All Ratios 913A582: eBay Motors (item 220419915195 end time Oct-14-10 09:39:17 PDT)

or this one?

The OEM ring gear (in good condition) is unbolted from the OEM open diff carrier and bolted on to the TruTrac.

There have been a few posts regarding the TruTrac bolts backing out after install, so those should probably be retorqued to spec with loctite.

I would also recommend new carrier bearings and races (approx $35), rather than attempting to reuse the OEM bearings.

The service manual advises replacement of the axle seals and axle bearings any time the axle shafts are removed, although most people do not find this necessary. If you have axle seal leak(s), this would be a good time to replace them.

There is only one model no. of TruTrac, and it fits 2004-2007 year trucks. It appears to me you posted the same Ebay link twice.

You also need (2) bearing's, (2) bearing races, a few Qts. of 75W140 gear oil & some sealant.

thanks for the price break down with the part numbers!! I will see if any local shops can do it for the same price.

Were the Axle seals you had installed---were those Nissan parts or is there an aftermarket part that is better????????

If you have the stamped steel cover on the diff, now would be a good time to replace that with either the stock finned diff cover that came later, or personally I would add a Mag-Hytec extra capacity cover. The Mag-Hytec cover will come with gasket and all new bolts as well as the e-brake bracket or you can reuse the old one with a little touch up grinding to clear the cover.

I bought a Mag-Hytec cover on ebay and its on its way!!! I can do it myself now, but If I get the itch, I might do the TruTrac also and just put it on then. I was wanting to see what kind of parts and how much this project will really cost me.

So far on this thread I've got Trutrac, bearings and races, gear oil and diff cover, and both rear axle seals (which mine look to be holding at this time).

I just bought this truck and I plan on keeping it for quite a while. The wife will probably flip out when I tell her I want to spend over $1000 bucks when its really not broken, but thats the fun of being married!

Ensure that you check the preload on this also, many just set backlash and off they go, but you need to set the preload as well, this may have been some of the cause of TT bolts loosening since it is possible both sides of the bearing adjusters weren't set to the proper preload when turning the gear up front. I don't have the exact procedure but know the principle of it, when setting backlash you adjust that, but you have to adjust both side bearing adjusters to have a certain in/lbs when rotating the whole assy from the front pinion gear. That ensures that there is sufficient force from both sides to keep the carrier assy from walking side to side. That not setting preload, and loading and unloading is what I think was causing the TT bolts to back out. There is a preload with axles in and without, better to use the without then install the axles. Really you should have this done with someone that has experience in this also, or at least have a resource to use should you see a problem or don't understand something.

I was going to start looking in the local area for a 4x4 shop that has done at least a couple of these. Hopefully they know all about this kind of stuff, b/c this is way beyond comfort level of maintenance.

Guys

Thanks a bunch for this site and thread. I posted last night on the sticky about the diff leak problems. One of the mods was very helpful and I have chosen to move to the Tru Trac next week for install. This seems to be the best option for me performance and cost wise and would not have known about this without this site.

Thanks very much !!

Will do Jetchaser. Tell me about your Seat Covers. I have some old ones that work but are not custom. I am in waders a lot in my truck and would like to hear about those is possible.

The seat covers are good. I've only had the truck for a couple of months now. They came with the truck and fit nicely. Held on with velcro. They hold tight to the seat which is really good, doesn't slide around or come loose. I like them for the looks myself.

I am 90% prepared to pull the trigger on the Trutrac, but one nagging question remains and I'm not totally sure of the answer.

I have an '05 with e-lock and BTow and if I understand correctly, the Passenger side axle will not fit after the conversion. What is my best option for this? Do the spacers in the rebuild kit alleviate this issue, or do I need something else to make the axle fit?

One other option is to purchase another driver's side axle and put it on the passenger side, but that adds quite a bit to the cost.

The rear has 75K on it so I'll be replacing the bearings and seals which is beyond my expertise, so I'll have that done by a professional so any other work that needs to be done to the passenger side axle could be done then, I'm just not really sure what needs to be done.

Thanks in advance for any advice and thanks for making this a sticky!

First I have heard of this. Any threads out there about this?

Hey gents, so I figured I'd add to a thread pertaining to the true trac. I sent an email and got confirmation that they are not going to make one for 07 and later titans...So does anybody out there know of another option similar to the true trac that does work for our trucks? I've got an 08.5 and currently have a bent axle shaft. Crummy Story...So I thought i'd change the shaft and have a the new rear done at the same time...Any help would be awesome at this point!

The TruTrac is available for 04 thru - 07 which have 32 spline axle shafts. 08+ uses 35 spline axle shafts. AFAIK, there is nothing available for 08+

Arizona Differential can make a Dana 60 w/ Titan tube ends, so you can have a True Trac or aftermarket locker and retain the OEM ABS brakes & wheel speed sensors.
