im thinking of selling the titan /trading it for a diesel truck..looking at the f250from 2001 to 2006. which year was bad. i heard that the 2002 to 2007 f-250 6.0L were bad engines...any comments....

the 6.0L hauls balls and the 7.3L is a strong much more reliable motor than the 6.0L but it all depends on who you talk to. btw, this thread is in the wrong forum. this is suspension, not Ford diesels, but oh well. go with a 6.0L F250 you'll love it!

the 6.0L engine is an oversized paperweight. If you want a Ford diesel, get the 7.3. Look over at dieselstop.com and search for 6.0L threads. Nothing but problems. There is a reason Ford and Navistar are at each other's necks right now sueing each other.

yeah what yellow said. the 6.0 stock is a stronger motor when it runs, but has some major issues with reliability. the 7.3 is a bit more sluggish but with minor upgrades it can take way more abuse and put out some monster numbers. one of my vendors has had his personal f250 7.3 with a banks turbo upgrade (and everything else) pushing 600 hp and something stupid like 900 pound feet or torque (daily driver w/ mild tune, it put way over that with the strip or extreme tune). and his new 6.0 has already had a new short block and heads (less than 6k miles) just do you homework and dont buy one some else has already abused (chipped/intake) exhaust and lifts are okay. or just break the bank and buy a new one, but besure to call all of us so we can roast marshmallows (with the flames there shooting out of the exhaust pipe) good luck

Walleeme has some serious stories about the Ford diesels. Hit him a pm to find out the details, but they seem to only run 400-500 miles between extended stays at the dealership.

when i worked for a landscaper back in the late 90's he had a tits 95 ford f-350 7.3L turbo diesel with a 5 speed, 4x4 auto lockers (i believe)... standard cab with an 8' stake body.

when he wasn't around we used to lay patches in that thing... serious balls. i should have bought it from him. we ran against a mustang one day (not sure the specs on the stang), trailer in tow....... and won.

I had a 2003 F250 with 7.3L (03 was the final year for the 7.3L) until it was stolen from the dam mall and taken to Mexico. Never had a single problem with it. Great engine that is very reliable. Like everybody has said, with minor mods you can get as much power as you'll ever need unless you plan on dragging it. Lots of aftermarket mods/parts available since it had a pretty long life. If you get a 7.3L, try to get an 02/03 as all the kinks were ironed out and it was a rock. If you go for a 6.0L get the newest one you can find and it "should" be alright. The newer ones for the most part had all the issues fixed. It will probably never be considered a reliable engine though.

I miss mine but after it got stolen I couldn't afford a new one and I wasn't about to buy an early year 6.0L and there wasn't a great selection of 7.3L at the time and I needed a truck. Decided to step down to the half-ton market and the Titan was the best I felt. Not minding the much lower gas prices though.

We have 4 F250's between 2001 and 2004 for field wagons.
2 gas.
2 diesel. 6.0 Td
The diesels are extremely unreliable and spend more time over at Ford than they do on the road.

The gas motor trucks live a much harder life, and are bulletproof.

Get a dodge. they are superior to all other species.

A Dodge .... ROFLOL Toyota has a better towing capacity... LOL

Seriously though. Look into the newer Chevy diesels with the LBZ engine with teh Allison trans. Now those are bulletproof.

Late 03 and early 04 6.0 were plagued with probs Turbos and fuel injectors. They got the bugs worked out after that though and the trans in the newer trucks the Torqueshift is 10x better than the trannys they had behind the 7.3 which was a great motor. If you are not going to plow alot(Ford has the solid front axle) with the truck I would atleast look at a chevy/gmc better ride better motor and the best trans you will find. I think the new LBZ D-max makes something like 360hp and over 600ft lbs. Its enough to snap your neck for sure. When Dodge can build a truck around that cummins then I would looke at one also. Anyway thats my .002 Keep us posted

CLG summed it all up pretty well. i'm just going to add my knowledge to it. The reason that all the die hard Ford Diesel guys did not like the 6.0 is not only because the '03-'04 were plagued w/ problems (which was caused not doing enough R&D out in the real world and only testing on dynos), but because they were used to the 7.3. the 7.3 was an absolute bulletproof motor. i mean you could go w/o and oil change on conventional oil for 15K miles. all of a sudden your truck starts running bad and you think OMG my engine is shot. so you go in a change the oil, and it felt like you just picked it up off the lot again. if i were you i would look at getting an '05-'07 since all the kinks were worked out by that model year, and depending upon where you live, they might even still have some new '07's left. Now the 6.0 is a great motor, stronger, faster, more reliable, and higher tow capacity. but it takes more maintenance, i can send you a guide to the 6.0 maintenance and other trouble spots in a PM if you want me to. GL and the 6.0 is a great choice.

Get the newer 6.0. We had and 03 6.0 and it was a P.O.S but my dads 05 and 06 have had absolutely no problems. He runs the Superchips programmer, cold air intake, and exhaust on them and tows his tractor trailer all the time with no problems whatsoever. The 7.3 is pretty much bullet proof, but it is significantly slower than the 6.0.

the D-max is a well made engine. but w/ that engine and allison 1000 tranny, its like an $8500 option

I've known a few diesel mechanics who've said the 7.3L is a bad a$$ motor for sure. I haven't heard alot about the newer engine, but the reliability issues with the 6.0L are certainly there. I would second the Chevy's with the Duramax/Allison combo; those are pretty rock solid too.

I don't know your location, but check out this website:

http://www.handpickedtrucks.com/

They specialize in selling used Ford, Chevy, and Dodge diesels. Most are highway driven from out west, brought back here to sell (the lot is in Va.). Anyway, they usually have a good selection of 7.3L F250's and some newer Chevy's as well. The mileage on most is between 70 - 100K, which most die hard diesel guys know is nothing on those motors. Good Luck and keep us posted.
