Just pulled mine out to install rear diff breather kit and it was full of gritty dirt. I could blow either way through it easily but that means water could easily enter as well. My X is only 2 years old and 30000km, in two more years I could see this being fully plugged. I'm glad this model has been around long enough to have lots of history and info available on it and I read about this on these forums.

Looks just like mine. Rusted solid . I just got my axle vent kit from Cajun yesterday. Don't know how long its been like that but so far no seal leakage. Will be replacing this weekend.

Finally changed the axle vent using the Cajun kit yesterday. You got to do it. Its not a joke. I don't know how the axle seals did not blow out or leak but this was clogged shut. While I only have 69000 on my 05 it could have cost me a lot more not to do it. CHECK THOSE VENTS !

So FishinAlaska are you saying this mod is unnecessary ? Even rusted closed like mine were. If you want to climb under ever couple thousand miles and check to be free that's up to you or you can do the upgrade and forget it.

No, that's not what Fishn said at all. He was replying to the other poster who said you could avoid this mod if you stay out of the mud. That's complete hogwash, and this is the first mod any owner should do, hands down.

Well, it looks like this is something I'm going to have to check into when I can. I really know nothing about this rear axle vent kit, but I got a 2013 with 30k on it and I'm willing to bed that me axle is going to be the same story as all of the previous posters. Thank you for bringing this problem up for me! I forgot all about it!

This is an absolute must for anyone that owns a Titan. Why flirt with disaster??

You can do it one of two ways. Buy the kit from Cajun (~$40) or do some sourcing on your own and save a few bucks. If you self-source, just be sure you get the right fitting (I ordered one from Nissan, a perfect fit) and plan on going to multiple parts stores to find a fuel filter without the check valve. I think, all told, I spent about $20-25 and a couple of hours sourcing time, plus 20min to install it.

I guess there's a third option. You could do nothing and pray it doesn't bite you, then complain about how crap Nissan is when you have to shell out for rear axle seals. But that's not smart.

This type of mod was the first thing we always did to every truck we've ever owned in my family. Used to run the lines up to a t-fitting mounted to the firewall and vent both diffs there, with a nice (chrome) Moroso valve cover breather as the vent cap. This is way easier than all that.
